Soil + Soul
Healing Toolkits
At Prospering backyards, we are committed to reducing lead exposure and healing soil using natural, low-cost methods that can be applied right in our own backyards. That is why we have developed other materials in collaboration with other experts and organizations to learn about different methods to reduce exposure to contaminants in the soil.
These materials started as resources used during March and April 2025 on hands-on workshops focused on addressing environmental contaminants in the wake of this year's urban fires. We reviewed practical ways to protect our health, restore the land, and reduce exposure to toxins. These zines are designed to start the healing needed in our hearts, our soils, and our communities. Before starting: Lead is the most common contaminant in urban soils, and intake of contaminated soil through direct ingestion, dust inhalation, or exposure to soil clinging to produce may pose a serious health risk. Children and people with preexisting conditions (pregnancy, anemia, neurological, and immune) are at the greatest risk from lead contamination. There are no safe levels of lead in the blood. Lead can affect almost every organ and system in your body. The nervous system is the main target for lead poisoning in children and adults. Exposure to lead can cause developmental effects in children, including but not limited to reduced IQ and attention span, hyperactivity, impaired growth, and learning disability. Children and individuals with preexisting conditions should avoid participating in soil testing and any form of soil manipulation. The use of personal protective equipment is required.
